The St. Regis New York

NEW YORK CITY

When the Astors first opened its doors in 1904, the St. Regis Hotel was the epicenter of New York’s social scene, lavish and full of splendor. The hotel’s magnetic atmosphere of high society and high culture turned it into an icon of the city. Our design for the hotel's public spaces seeks to recapture the uncanny magic of the St. Regis for a new century. We embraced the historical beaux arts architecture of the hotel while layering it with a contemporary lightness, evoking the Astors’ legacy of grandeur through a palette of emerald greens and red rose tones, sculptural forms and rich materiality.

To recapture the magic of the St. Regis.

The new spaces are enlivened by moments from the past. Digging beneath layers of previous renovations, we followed subtle gems and traces of beauty buried in the original structure. Above reception, we uncovered the shadow of twin Tiffany glass skylights obscured by previous work. Their elegant stained glass is honored in a new pair of windows which now glow above guests at check-in. Meanwhile, a custom bronze screen behind the reception desks carries on the quality and integrity of the lobby’s heritage bronze detailing in a contemporary language.

Enlivened by moments from the past.

A vital and convivial spirit.

Referencing archival photos, we lightened the lobby space by honing the interior columns and breaking down visual barriers between the King Cole Bar and the Drawing Room. The spaces are now engaged with one another in a vital and convivial spirit. Spaces that were once rigid have been drawn out into an energetic color journey that is both elegant and otherworldly. In the Cognac Room, a hand-painted wallcovering designed in collaboration with De Gournay depicts peacocks perched on rose bushes and rose vines. Introducing brighter colors, feature rose displays, bold furniture silhouettes and textures of velvet and fringe, we strived to bring back the modern soul of the St. Regis, along with its opulent imagination.
